Abraxas Power Corporation has awarded McDermott an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) agreement to manage the engineering and construction planning for what will be Canada’s first commercial green hydrogen and green ammonia production facility.

Located in Central Newfoundland, the $8.7 billion project will have the capacity to produce 165 kta of green hydrogen and 5000 metric tons of green ammonia per day. The facility will also include the development of a 530-turbine wind farm that can generate 3.5 gigawatts (GW) of electricity and 150 megawatts (MW) of solar photovoltaic (PV).

Under the scope of the ECI agreement, McDermott will provide the front-end engineering design, engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) execution planning services and open-book EPC cost estimate for hydrogen production, ammonia processing, and product storage. McDermott aims to leverage its extensive experience and integrated delivery model to offer a modular implementation solution expected to enhance cost efficiency, mitigate risk, and ensure quality. One of the project’s goals includes annual production targets of 200,000 tons of green hydrogen and 1 million tons of green ammonia annually, with its own port infrastructure to support global product exports
