A new report issued by the Washington State Department of Commerce found that the state has great potential to become a leader in green hydrogen production, a zero-carbon clean energy resource that is seen as crucial for decarbonization efforts, according to coverage by The Chronicle Newspaper.

“Green hydrogen is a critical tool in Washington’s decarbonization toolkit and we must use it wisely,” Gov. Jay Inslee said in a statement. “Since we need significant amounts of clean electricity to produce hydrogen, we know we must target the most critical sectors that are harder to decarbonize, such as industrial uses and heavy transportation. This report helps chart a path for us to deploy hydrogen in the most strategic ways for our economy while building a more just energy future for all Washingtonians.”

The report identifies the state’s abundant renewable energy resources, particularly hydropower, as a critical factor in supporting green hydrogen production. Washington State’s commitment to sustainability and its existing infrastructure make it well-positioned for harnessing hydrogen’s potential across various sectors, including transportation and industry. The report recommends prioritizing strategic uses of hydrogen, considering environmental justice, and ensuring a skilled workforce.

Development of a vibrant green hydrogen sector also promises job creation and equitable economic development across the state, according to the report.  In particular, a project near East Wenatchee that uses hydropower to produce hydrogen, is particularly promising, with potential expansion to serve the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub now in development. The selection of the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub brings with it as much as $1 billion in incentives, according to The Chronicle’s coverage of the report.
