Hyundai Motor Group has generously donated a specially equipped Hydrogen Fuel Cell Support Bus to the Korean National Fire Agency. The initiative aims to provide firefighters a mobile location to recover from the challenging conditions they encounter during fire operations.
Accompanying the donation is a campaign video titled ‘Got Your Back – Hydrogen Fuel Cell Support Bus for Firefighters’ Recovery in the Line of Duty,’ narrated by Korean American firefighter Peter Lee. The video showcases the challenges firefighters face and emphasizes the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Support Bus’s positive impact on improving operational conditions and aiding recovery for frontline responders. Experienced firefighters featured in the campaign advocate for taking breaks during intense firefighting, stressing the importance of self-care.
Inspired by the Hyundai Universe fuel cell electric vehicle and designed in collaboration with Korean firefighters, the Support Bus was donated to the Fire Department on Jeju Island, integrating firefighters’ input into its design.
Enhanced recovery features include:
- An external air tent powered by the Support Bus.
- Storage for fire-resistant clothing to prevent contamination.
- A U-shaped meeting space with sofas for a communal atmosphere.
During large-scale fire incidents, firefighters work in shifts with operational intervals lasting 20 to 30 minutes. Between duties, they can now recuperate inside the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Support Bus, which operates silently and without vibration, offering an ideal environment for rest and revitalization.
The vehicle’s hydrogen fuel cell emits pure water as a byproduct as well as generates electricity that powers amenities like air-conditioning and heating without emitting carbon dioxide. Fueled by green hydrogen from Jeju Island’s production complex, the Support Bus exemplifies Hyundai’s commitment to a hydrogen-based ecosystem and advancing a sustainable hydrogen society.
