Spanish gas distributor Redexis has successfully injected green hydrogen into the natural gas grid for the first time in Spain. Recognized as the largest fully commissioned renewable hydrogen blending initiative in Europe, Redexis is also the only authorized company by the Ministry for Ecological Transition to implement this green hydrogen injection system in the country.
Blending Green Hydrogen into the Natural Gas Pipeline
The newly operational infrastructure in Lloseta, Mallorca includes a 3.2-kilometer pipeline connected to the San Juan-Cas Tresorer-Son Reus primary transport pipeline, a hydrogen reception station, and a blending system designed for seamless hydrogen integration. In its initial phase, the project will use a 2.5 MW electrolyzer to generate green hydrogen and inject up to 190 tons of green hydrogen per year (6,327 MWh/year), with future projections estimating an increase to 575 tons per year (19,147 MWh/year).
The hydrogen blend in the gas network is currently set at 2%. However, as the project progresses towards its completion in 2025, there are plans to increase this blend, with the infrastructure designed to handle up to 20% hydrogen integration. The integration of green hydrogen into the gas network was facilitated through a static mixer system. This technology ensures a consistent blend of hydrogen with natural gas, enabling a smooth injection process while maintaining uniform gas composition and minimizing turbulence.
Moreover, this project connects to the existing 1,400-kilometer gas grid, supplying energy to approximately 115,000 homes and 2,000 businesses across the island. The approach is expected to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions, with estimates suggesting a reduction of between 1,265 and 3,829 tonnes annually.
The Green Hysland Project: Building a Clean Hydrogen Ecosystem
The green hydrogen injection occurring in Spain is part of the broader Green Hysland project, aimed at establishing a sustainable hydrogen ecosystem in the Balearic Islands. Supported by the European Union with €10 million from the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, this initiative involves over 30 organizations, including key players like Enagás, Acciona Energía, and Cemex.
Fidel López Soria, CEO of Redexis, emphasized the significance of the hydrogen injection, stating, “This achievement represents a before and after in energy innovation. With the first injection of green hydrogen into the natural gas grid, we not only demonstrate the innovative potential of our infrastructures but also establish a model that can be replicated across other regions and countries in Europe.”
